Over 60 years of experience in teacher and professional education> Susan's Story

Susan, a graduate of the John Tracy Clinic/University of San Diego Teacher Education Program, teaches preschool children who are deaf and hard of hearing in the Covina Valley Unified School District east of Los Angeles. She is a "double" JTC graduate as the mother of a child who is profoundly deaf and attended JTC with her family as a preschooler.

Susan’s daughter Carissa received a cochlear implant at age 4. She is now a senior at California State University at Long Beach majoring in dance.

Susan’s background as a mother of a deaf child has given her special insight into the needs of the children and parents with whom she works. The skills she learned at JTC as a mother, she has translated into action for her career as a teacher.

“Everything I did with my daughter at JTC,” she says, “I do now as a teacher because it works.”

Susan received her California Credential in General Education in the spring of 2007 and began her teaching career and her graduate program that fall. She graduated in May 2009 with a Master’s degree and California Credential in Deaf and Hard of Hearing from the University of San Diego.

Carissa is a junior in college, majoring in dance. She will be working in the JTC Summer Session's Sibling Program for the fourth year.
