ITE hearing aids

Why do Audiologists steer parents away from ITE hearing aids for infants? I have heard safety and cost cited as reasons. However, what if cost is not an issue for the parents.

Dear Mrs. Farrad,
Many parents ask about putting ITE (in-the-ear) hearing aids on infants. Your audiologist mentioned cost and safely as important reasons. Safely is primary, as small infants often put objects into their mouths and little fingers can easily take hearing aids out of ears. And if your little one isn't putting them in his mouth, you can be sure that they will disappear in the house or yard. Although you mentioned that money is not an issue, you might be replacing his hearing aids at least once a week.
While your child is young, he will benefit more from hearing aids which he wears consistently rather than being without amplification which his aids are being re-made. And BTE hearing aids can be attached with a little clip to the back of the shirt, so they will not be lost or swallowed. At this young age, your little fellow doesn't care if you can see his hearing aids or not --- he just needs to hear and be safe. You have a wise audiologist.
Sincerely,
Kathleen
