Cochlear Implants and Static

Does the MedEL cochlear implant have static problems? I believe the COCHLEAR model does?

Dear Ms. Sikes,
Dear Mrs. Sikes,
Actually all cochlear implants can be harmed by electrical static in the air. In other words, if a child goes down a plastic slide and you live in a dry climate, the static from that slide can wipe out the map in the processor, and possibly even harm the internal parts of the implant. The implant manufacturers have been working to eliminate this problem and each of them reports some success.
In terms of picking an implant, you probably don't need to be thinking about static. You will want to think about the features of each implant, it's success rate, and how it looks. Also talk to the surgeon about the implant which he or she prefers to use, and ask the audiologist which implant he or she has most experience in mapping. This is very important.
Please write again if you have more questions or need information.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Sutherland
