difficulty in oral speech
Good
day to you Miss Kathleen, My child is in school (Joseph Gualandi school for
hearing Impaired) for more than a year, he shows great improvement in terms
of written exercises but has much difficulty in terms of oral speech. One factor
I'm considering is the level of his deafness, he is not benefiting much from
hearing aids. If it is not too much to ask, can you give us guides or example
of lessons on how to teach my child easier ways to pronounce the sounds. Thank
you very much from your time hope to hear an answer from you very soon.
Dear Mrs. Canasto
Your son is attending a school for children who are hearing impaired and you
wrote that he is doing well. I'm sure that you are in close contact with his
teachers, and that you guide him daily as he learns each subject. Since Prinz
is not benefiting from hearing aids, you have made a wise decision about educational
placement. However, you want your little son to develop spoken language skills,
and you are wondering how best to hlep him pronounce the sounds of speech.
Children speak what they hear, and since Prinz's hearing aids do not provide
him with an awareness of voice, it is difficult for him to learn to speak. Modern
technology now provides us with cochlear imlants, and you might consider this
device for Prinz. An implant can give him an awareness of all speech sounds.
You might want to talk to your child's audiolgoist about this device and also
read our special papers. You will find them at our website: www.jtc.org. Go
to Correspondence Course and Special Papers. You will find two of them: An Introduction
to the Cochlear Implant and The Cochlear Implant and Your Child.
If Prinz is between two and five years of age, our Correspondence Course will
give you many ideas to help your son develop spoken language skills. The course
is free of charge, and you can go through our website to enroll. If Prinz is
over six years of age, you will work closely with his teachers and speech therapists
to aid him in developing spoken language.
If you would like more information or have questions, please write again.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Sutherland
