Cochlear Implants at John Tracy Clinic

About 75% of the children receiving services through John Tracy Clinic programs have implants. John Tracy Clinic offers a wealth of expertise in the area of cochlear implant habilitation with young children. Members of the staff have been working with implants since they first became available to young children in the United States. In 1988, NECCI (Network of Educators of Children with Cochlear Implants) was founded by a Clinic staff member, who also served on the team that created the NECCI Inservice Curriculum to teach professionals how to work with children who have implants. Clinic staff has conducted many NECCI workshops to educate professionals about implants.

The Clinic staff is experienced in educating and guiding parents to maximize their child's development of listening skills and spoken language through the implant. Parents are guided in areas particular to the implant:

  • Preparing a child for the implant

  • Reading an implant map

  • Troubleshooting the implant

  • Using assistive devices with the implant

  • Protecting the implant from ESD (electrostatic discharge)

  • Using bilateral implants

All of the Clinic programs address the needs of children with implants, from the Correspondence Courses, to the onsite educational programs, as well as audiological and consultation services. Even the Clinic facilities are designed and treated to protect implants from ESD.
