| What
is the correspondence course? |
up |
|
| JTC offers
three Correspondence Courses. They are: Baby Course for parents of infants
from birth to two years of age, Preschool Course for parents and children
from two to six years of age and the Deaf -Blind Course for parents and
children who have hearing and vision loss. |
|
| Each course
consists of lessons containing information about guiding our child in developing
listening, language and speech skills. There is also information about child
development. Games and Activities are included to provide an apportunity
for you to guide your child in developing listening and language skills
while having fun at home. |
|
| How
does it work? |
up |
|
|
When we receive your
completed application, a member of the Correspondence Department staff
will prepare a file for your enrollment, assign an enrollment
number and mail out the first lesson, and where applicable, the first
video tape.
Each Lesson is designed
to be used for approximately one month, but more or less time can be taken
depending on your child and family circumstances. Families with very young
children might want to take more time, whereas a family with an older
child will use the Lessons very quickly.
Along with your Lesson,
you will receive a Parent Report Form. You can write as much or as little
as you like, but is is important that we hear from you so we can send
another Lesson and give you personalized ideas and suggestions in your
letters from the staff. This is not a test and there are no wrong answers.
When we receive your
report, the Director of the Correspondence Department will write a personal
letter to you, answering questions or providing more information. It is
through this personal correspondence that we work as a team to provide
the best guidance possible for your little one.
|
|
| Can
I use the Course if my child has other disabilities? |
up |
|
| Yes. You
might need to adapt some information and the games and activities to his
or her level of interest and ability, but the basic information will be
useful, and we will discuss your child's needs and abilitites as we correspond. |
|
| How
do I submit my report? |
up |
|
| You can
return your completed Report by fax or traditional mail. Or you can call
on our toll-free line (800-522-4582 in the US or toll
free from other countries) and speak directly to the Director of the
Correspondence Department or a member of her staff. Also, parent reports
can be sent through our website.. |
|
| How
much does it cost? |
up |
|
| The
Correspondence Courses, like all John Tracy clinic services, is FREE OF
CHARGE to parents. A bound volume of the complete Course, for which there
is a nominal charge, is available to professionals, organizations or students
working in the field of education of children who are deaf. Professionals
can order from our website. |
|
| Can
I choose which course to take? |
up |
|
| Yes, however
the courses are written for children in a specific age range. If your child
is three years old, the information, games and activities in the Baby Course
would not be appropriate. However, if your child has significant developmental
delays, the Baby Course might be just right. Placement is based on age,
but accommodations can always be made. |
|
| Does
my child need to have a hearing aid or cochlear implant to start the course? |
up |
|
| No. You
can begin before your child receives amplification. There is much you can
do to help your child learn that sounds exist even if he or she cannot hear
them. |
|
| Do
you have a special course for my child who has a cochlear implant? |
up |
|
|
All children (hearing
and deaf) develop listening and spoken language skills in the same manner.
The Correspondence Courses provide information to guide which is appropriate
for your child no matter what amplification he or she uses.
|
|
| Why
do I need to fill out the application? |
up |
| The
application contains important information which will help the Director
of the Correspondence Department as she writes to you. She needs to know
when your child received amplification, what services he or she has, and
if there are other delays. Then their personal letters provide more guidance
for you. |
|
| I
just filled out the application online. Now what? |
up |
|
| Within
a week, you will receive the first lesson along with additional information
that will be helpful to you. The Director of the Correspondence Department
will write a letter that will be sent separately and which will be the beginning
of your correspondence with her. |
|
| What
shall I do while I wait for the first lesson? |
up |
|
| Although
the Introduction is coming to you through traditional mail, you can access
it online. It will give you some ideas to get you started. Also, you might
want to access the Special Papers
which will provide you with additional information suited to your needs. |
|
| What
do the Lessons look like? |
up |
|
| Each
Lesson has a section on Communication, Games and Activities and Development. |
|
| What
if my child doesn't respond to the games and activities? |
up |
|
| Some
games and activities might not be appropriate for your child. You can put
them aside for a while until he is interested, or you can change them and
adapt them to his level of interest and ability. It is not necessary to
play all the games and activities in order to send in your report. |
|
| How
do I send you my child's audiological or therapy information? |
up |
|
| Make
sure that your enrollment
number is on all your correspondence. You can send this email to the
Director of the Correspondence Department by attachment at kambrosi@jtc.org.
You can send it by fax to: 213-745-5074. Or you can enclose it with your
Parent Report if mailing. It is important that the Director of the Correspondence
Department has this information so that she can answer your questions, so
please send all up-dated test results. |
