JTC is expanding the reach of our Community Hearing Screening Program to the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, thanks to a grant from Best Start L.A.  Our program screens approximately 20,000 children age 5 and younger per year throughout Southern California for hearing loss.  Our expanded program will reach more than 500 additional children, ages 0-5, in daycare centers and preschools in Koreatown.  Because the early stages of language development are such a critical influence on children's future ability to learn and communicate, JTC seeks to identify them at a young age and refer them for additional testing and possible medical referral.  Our project includes the hiring and training of a bilingual Korean screener, and the translation of educational materials and referral services for Korean families. Screening and materials will also be available for Spanish and English speaking families who live in the neighborhood.
