Harnessing the power of technology, JTC is piloting an expansion of our weekly Parent Education classes. Videoconference technology allows JTC to create face-to-face parent classes for families living outside of Los Angeles. First introduced in 2010-2011 with a cohort in Las Vegas, Nevada, two new series were introduced in early 2012 for families living in Calexico, California and the city of Mexicali, in Baja Mexico. Both series are offered in Spanish and are designed for parents of very young children newly diagnosed with hearing loss. JTC believes that parents are the most important educators of their deaf or hard-of-hearing child. Parent education is critical to the successful development of a young child with hearing loss – as parents gain knowledge and information, they are better able to assist their deaf child in learning to communicate in a hearing and speaking world. JTC’s classes and support groups give parents and other family members the knowledge and emotional skills to foster their child’s progress as well as cope with their own anxiety, grief and stress.
