Posted on January 06 2012, 6:10:25 PM | Posted by jtcweb
The Ling Six-Sound Test is a valuable at-home test which can be used to determine that your child is responding to sound consistently every day. This test is also useful when aided audiologic evaluations are not available for your child. It is designed to provide information about your child’s ability to detect speech sounds in low, mid and high frequencies (pitch). If your child can detect (hear) these sounds, he should be able to discriminate (understand) the sounds in spoken language.

An audiogram is used to graph responses to sounds and speech during certain hearing tests. The area outlined on the audiogram showing most of the speech sounds looks like a banana shape (above). This range is often referred to as the “speech banana.” Using the Frequency Spectrum of Sounds parents can recognize where their child’s hearing levels are in comparison to the speech banana. The examples on the Spectrum can also help identify types of environmental sounds their child is likely to hear.

A language sample is a record of the words your child says spontaneously. For this assessment, it does not matter if those words are clearly spoken. What your child says (expressive language) is more important than how clearly he is saying the words (speech). You can use a language sample to celebrate your child’s progress and to set future language goals.
