We are celebrating Cindy McGrath, JTC’s first Alumni Ambassador! She is an active participant of our Alumni group and goes above and beyond to help this group thrive! Her enthusiasm and commitment to JTC is contagious and a tough act to follow.
For more than 20 years, Cindy and her family have been active participants in JTC’s community – engaging alumni families and helping to plan events, like the CPK Fundraiser last September, the Jingle Mingle in December 2019, Open House in February of this year and many more.
Cindy’s daughter Erika was born 1988, just one month after California passed law requiring newborns to be screened for hearing loss. After Erika failed her screening, an audiologist referred the family to John Tracy Center.
In JTC’s Parent-Infant Program, Cindy’s family learned the importance of talking while playing. But while they sang songs, read books and cooked in the kitchen, Cindy says, “what was really happening is I was gaining the knowledge and support to help Erika”.
After receiving her first cochlear implant, Erika joined JTC’s Preschool. In addition to individual therapy, her family dedicated themselves to “learning everything we could to help Erika by attending parent education classes and support groups.
The experience was transformative for the McGrath family. “John Tracy Center is different from most places because the whole family is educated and supported,” Cindy says.
