Our son, Antonio Caballero, is turning 16 years old on August 25th and as we reflect upon his accomplishments and the many individuals who have had an impact and played an important role in his success throughout the years, it all leads back to the strong foundation that was put in place by the John Tracy Center (JTC).

Antonio’s journey started over 15 years ago when he was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The decision to have him bilaterally implanted and participate in the John Tracy Center program have been the catalysts to his success. While he has had to face more than his share of obstacles and challenges along the way, he has persevered. He has made sacrifices, put in the time and effort, and worked tirelessly to ensure he is afforded the same opportunities as his hearing peers. As his parents, we are impressed with his ability to continually rise to the occasion when life becomes difficult and overwhelming but most importantly, we are proud that he understands the importance of giving back to the very foundation that opened the door to a world of possibility.

He willingly participates in assisting students enrolled in Master’s and PhD programs offered by JTC and other universities, speaking on panels to parents of newly diagnosed children with hearing loss, and meeting with families who struggle with the decision to implant their children. Most recently he interviewed Derrick Coleman Jr., the first deaf offensive football player in the NFL and member of the 2013 Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl team, for the JTC Speaker Series (https://www.jtc.org/alumni/) where they each shared their personal experiences, feelings, and lessons learned as individuals with hearing loss.

This is why we feel so strongly about acknowledging the contributions of the John Tracy Center to Antonio’s success. Their program provided us with a safe place to grieve, learn, grow, and acquire the tools and resources necessary to navigate his journey. JTC steered us to the light at the end of the tunnel. This is why we decided to embark on celebrating Antonio’s 16th birthday milestone by creating a fundraising campaign for the John Tracy Center. During this unprecedented time, we can demonstrate our support as a token of our immense gratitude. We ask that you please join us in contributing to the John Tracy Center so that they may continue to provide their services to other children and families like ours and continue their wonderful legacy of embracing families who are just embarking on their own personal journeys.
