John Tracy Clinic’s Vice President of Programs Jill Muhs, M.S., Ed., traveled to Portlaoise Town, Co. Laois, Ireland earlier this month to present a one day seminar to 25 families of young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The following day Ms. Muhs provided a presentation to 50 professionals in the hearing loss field. This unique international event was planned by Lorraine Murphy, Laura Keating and Susan O’Sullivan, whose families participated in JTC’s onsite International Sessions and online Worldwide Parent Education in recent years, with support from a committee of the Our New Ears organization and representatives from DeafHear.ie.
The seminar featured tips for parents and teamwork with professionals. JTC also premiered its new video “A Way with Words” about the experiences of the Henry Family from Ireland, who filled their child’s day with language as they made changes in family routines to guide their daughter’s communication.
The participants gave this experience high marks. Laura Keating commented, “Thank you from the bottom of all our hearts for coming to Ireland and believing in the parents and families here. I have to pinch myself that it actually happened! Already, it has made a difference to the parents and families and we know that the ripple effect will be felt for a long time to come.” Lorraine Murphy wrote, “I have been contacted by parents saying they feel invigorated, that their hope has been restored and they are ready to face the challenge ahead with renewed energy. We can never thank you enough, you have brought a new dawn for families, and in two short days changed lives.”
