Friday Family School

It's a unique initiative providing families of young children with specialized services and support.

Program Information

  • Weekly Friday sessions, September through May
  • Session Time: 9:00 am until 11:30 am

The first half of Friday Family School's morning schedule is set aside for parents and their children with hearing loss to participate in age-appropriate play groups. Professionals coach families in communication skills, lead group activities and provide adult education tips. Beginning parents are able to observe more experienced parents interacting with their own children in a supportive setting. Listening devices are checked and audiologists are available for consultation. Children and their siblings remain in their classrooms and participate in a stimulating curriculum when their parents proceed to the adult workshop sessions.

During the second half of the morning parents attend parent workshops and support groups in English or Spanish. The adult education presentations cover audiology, language, and child development concepts as well as family issues and experiences, focusing on the distinctive and challenging journey in learning to parent a child with hearing loss. Support groups provide a safe and empowering environment where participants can experience encouragement, renewal, and transformation. Parents find mentors and role models in other parents who help strengthen their families and create extended communities. Parents learn new skills to cope with the challenges they may encounter as families of children with hearing loss and other special needs.
